Balazs Bagyi New Quartet on tour in Poland this April.

Balázs Bágyi, one of the most recognized Hungarian jazz drummers, will perform in April on a concert tour in Poland. The quartet will give concerts from 11 to 22 April and visit, among others, Szczecin, Warsaw and Wrocław.

Drummer and composer Balázs Bágyi is currently one of the most respected musicians of the Hungarian jazz scene, active internationally and leading his own bands for the last two decades. Being a member of many bands, he creates music in almost all genres, and his unique melodic drumming style gives a complex musical experience.

Balázs Bágyi New Quartet will start their concert tour in Wałbrzych at the Apropos Club (April 11), then play in several other cities and venues: Vertigo Jazz Club in Wrocław (April 12); Victoria Cultural Center in Gliwice (April 13); Filarami Club in Gorzów Wielkopolski (April 14); and Jassmine in Warsaw (April 15). Then they will perform at the Jazzment Club in Szczecin (16.04); at the Municipal Cultural Center in Legionowo (April 17); at the Łódzki Dom Kultury (April 19). and finally at the Center for the Meeting of Cultures in Lublin (April 20). The tour is organized by the JAZZ PO POLSKU Foundation.

“The current music of the Balázs Bágyi quartet now contains less folk sounds compared to previous albums. It is pure, acoustic jazz, based on elements of post-bop ¬– a style originating from the 60s. The concert tour in Poland is another project that we are implementing as part of bilateral cultural cooperation, the idea of which we want to promote in the future,” says Jakub Krzeszowski, creator of JAZZ PO POLSKU, under which Polish artists regularly perform abroad, especially in Asia.

Balázs Bágyi’s partners are recognized musicians of the young generation from Budapest – saxophonist Soso Lakatos, who studied and graduated in Amsterdam; classically educated pianist, awarded by Junior Prima, Dezső Oláh and Péter Oláh, one of the most outstanding Hungarian double bass players of his generation.

In recent years, Balázs Bágyi New Quartet has performed several concert tours in the USA as well as at many European jazz festivals, such as Bratislava Jazz Days, Bansko Jazz Festival, Nisville, Mosaic Jazz Sibiu, Sarajevo Winter, Petrovac Jazz Festival, Skopje Summer Festival, as well as at Jazz Juniors in Krakow. The band also performs regularly in China, where it performed, among others, in at the Nine Gates Jazz Festival in Beijing. The formation also collaborates with Shanghai trumpeter Li Xiaochuan, with whom she released the album „Chinese Suite” in 2018. In 2016, for the album „Homage to Shakespeare” with guest vocalist Kriszta Pocsai, the band won the Gramofon Magazine award, awarded by an international jury. In the same year, in the readers’ poll of the Hungarian portal JazzMa.hu, they received 1st place in the „band of the year” category, and Balázs Bágyi was also elected „composer of the year”. The quartet performs the bandleader’s original music.

The Balázs Bágyi New Quartet Live in Poland 2023 concert tour is organized by the JAZZ PO POLSKU Foundation, in cooperation with the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center in Warsaw.
